National 50th anniversary celebrations will recognize artists, advocates, and leaders whose work has strengthened Canada's theatre, opera, and dance community for generations
Canadian Actors' Equity Association (Equity) will celebrate its 50th anniversary this fall with events across the country honouring artists and leaders whose talent, service, and passion have helped shape Canada's professional performing arts industry. As Equity marks five decades representing professional artists working in theatre, opera, and dance, the Association will recognize members whose contributions have helped shape both the profession and the Association.
The centrepiece of the anniversary celebrations will be the presentation of Equity Life Memberships—the Association's highest honour—recognizing outstanding contributions to the performing arts within Equity's jurisdiction. One recipient from each of Equity's geographic and discipline-based regions will receive the honour. The recipients are
Kent Allen (Saskatchewan), Jillian Rees Brown (Atlantic), Laurie Champagne (Stage Management), Micheline Chevrier (Quebec), Tracy Dahl (Eastern Opera), Donna Fletcher (Manitoba & Nunavut), Lorna Geddes (Dance), John Koensgen (Eastern Ontario & Outaouais), Doug McKeag (Southern Alberta), Billy Merasty (Ontario), Wade Nott (Western Opera), Maralyn Ryan (Northern Alberta & Northwest Territories), and James Fagan Tait (B.C. & Yukon).
Equity will also present the Larry McCance Award to former Equity Council Vice-President Donna Fletcher for her outstanding contribution to the Association.
The Emerging Artist Award, recognizing exceptional artistic achievement early in an Equity member's career, will be presented to Sophie-Thérèse Stone-Richards. The Award is sponsored by The Gail Asper Family Foundation and includes a generous $2,000 prize.
The Changemaker Award will be presented to Deborah Williams in recognition of her extraordinary leadership in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in Canada's performing arts sector.

"This anniversary is an opportunity to recognize the artists whose talent, leadership, and generosity have strengthened our profession, supported their colleagues, and helped build the Association we know today. We are proud to celebrate these remarkable individuals and the lasting impact they have had on artists and audiences across Canada.”
Founded in 1976, Canadian Actors' Equity Association represents nearly 6,000 professional artists working in theatre, opera and dance across Canada. Through collective bargaining, advocacy, and member services, Equity has spent five decades advancing fair working conditions and supporting Canada's professional performing arts sector.
The anniversary celebrations recognize not only Equity's past, but the artists whose contributions will continue to shape the next 50 years of professional live performance in Canada.
