Equity's Commitment to Safe and Respectful Workplaces
The recent news regarding allegations of sexual assault and criminal charges brought against a theatre technician serves to remind us that, although some progress has been made in recent years, there is still much to do to ensure safe and respectful workplaces in our industry.

Equity applauds the courage of those who stand up to and speak out against abuse, harassment, discrimination, and other forms of inappropriate behaviour that have no place in our sector. We encourage arts workers to learn more about their rights and obligations regarding safe and respectful workplaces by reading Equity’s Respectful Workplace Policy as well the anti-harassment legislation and workplace safety labour laws, specific to your province or territory, available here.

What’s more, we urge theatres to do their part in fostering a safe and respectful workplace by taking allegations of harassment seriously, developing a sound workplace policy of their own, and sharing Equity’s Not in Our Space! materials.

We remind artists that there are a number of support resources available to you if you have experienced or witnessed inappropriate behaviour, including HAVEN – the 24/7, bilingual reporting system which offers counselling services and more for those working on an Equity contract.

If you have any questions about your workplace rights or would like support in approaching an engager to report inappropriate behaviour, we encourage you to reach out to Equity.
