Budget 2026: Equity Applauds Artists and Culture Investment

Canadian Actors’ Equity Association applauds the investment in Canada’s cultural sector outlined in Budget 2026. Recognizing the role that nearly 688,000 arts workers play in strengthening Canada’s identity, cultural sovereignty and economy, the budget commits $4 billion over five years to support artists and artistic production.

Of particular interest is the proposed Canada Creative Credit, a new non-refundable personal income tax credit that, combined with the Basic Personal Amount, aims to provide tax relief on income earned from original and creative artistic works.

The federal government plans to consult with artists and stakeholders across the cultural sector before finalizing the credit’s structure and eligibility criteria, with further details expected in the Spring Economic Update 2027. Equity looks forward to participating in these consultations to ensure the credit benefits artists working in live performance.

Other noteworthy investments include an additional $20 million over three years, beginning in 2027–28, for the Canada Council for the Arts, as well as the creation of a Productivity Mega Deduction to help upgrade infrastructure, including accessibility improvements, at arts, culture and entertainment venues across Canada.

“We welcome the Government of Canada’s recognition of the important role artists play in Canada’s cultural identity and economy, and its commitment to investing in the sector,” said Alex Levine, Equity’s Executive Director. “The Canada Creative Credit has the potential to make a meaningful difference for artists, but its impact will depend on who qualifies. Artists working in live performance must not be overlooked when the eligibility criteria are developed.”

Canadian Actors’ Equity Association represents nearly 6,000 professional artists working in theatre, opera and dance across Canada. Through collective bargaining and advocacy, Equity has spent five decades advancing fair working conditions and supporting Canada’s professional performing arts sector.
