The Liaison is chosen by majority election in cases where more than one person expresses an interest, but the most common situation is that someone offers to serve and is acclaimed to the position. Either approach is fine.
When conducting the election, please take a minute to explain the role of the Liaison, especially the role that they can play in ensuring safe and respectful workplaces for everyone.
What’s involved in the election process?
The Liaison Election form is available in the Forms section of your myEquity account.
You’ll need to enter the name of the production and select the Engager — just start typing their name and it’ll appear. Then, enter the name, member number, and email address of the member elected as Liaison. You no longer need to provide information about who was present for the election.
We’ll send the elected Liaison a notice reminding them of their responsibility to file a Liaison Report. All members also now have access to the Liaison Report form in their myEquity account.
Who is eligible to serve as Liaison?
Any Equity member on contract for the show. A non-member working on a permit engagement contract may not serve as Liaison.
Although any eligible member can be a Liaison, we encourage choosing a Liaison with at least one prior engagement on a similar contract.
If you see things drifting in the direction of the responsibility being fobbed off on someone because they are the newest or youngest person in the room, please do your best to discourage it. The position is best filled by a member with at least some relevant contract experience under their belt.
Who is eligible to vote for the Liaison?
Any Equity member on contract for the show, including an Equity Director.
Who can be in the room?
All of the above, plus Equity apprentices and artists on permit engagement contracts — it’s a good opportunity to learn.
Who shouldn’t be in the room?
The following people are excluded from eligibility to serve or vote, and should not be in the room at the time the decision is made: any member who also serves in any producer/Engager capacity on the show (a director who is also Artistic Director at a theatre, an actor/producer, etc.).
