First Day Talk Template

Harassment comes in many forms ranging from the obvious to the subtle or unintentional. Examples of what constitutes harassment in this workspace can be found in the Not In OUR Space! materials and the Respectful Workplace Policy.

As part of the Not In OUR Space! Safe and Respectful Workplace program, Equity provides producers with two options for delivering messaging:

  1. A scripted statement to be read together with an Equity member whenever possible
  2. A checklist to use if you deliver your own message

Scripted Statement

Engager/Theatre:
We are committed to the pursuit of respectful workspaces and support for those who have experienced or witnessed harmful behaviours. We will not tolerate conduct that is meant to undermine the dignity or self-esteem of an individual, or which creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment.

A key goal of the Not In OUR Space! program is to foster a workspace culture in which each and every one of us feels free to speak up against harassment, unprofessional or inappropriate behaviour when it occurs to us or to others and before it has a chance to be repeated. This goal is made more possible in an environment of mutual support.

Equity Representative or Engager/Theatre:
Everyone working on this production bears a responsibility to look out for each other. When necessary we must help identify and address problems with a view to restoring a healthy, positive workspace where we can all thrive creatively and professionally.

Equity Representative:
If you’re not sure what to do, visit Equity’s website to access resources and report an issue.

[Add if applicable] We’ve also posted material on the callboard near the company’s anti-harassment policy.

If one is not available, Equity has created a template Small-scale Theatre Respectful Workspace Policy available for use by any engager.

Engager/Theatre:
I [OR name of engager staff member] am/is the contact for cases of harassment. You can approach me [OR name of person] directly or through my/their contact information, which is found on the call board near the copy of [name of Producer]’s anti-harassment policy.

[If the speaker is not the engager contact, add] You can also always reach out to me if you witness or experience questionable behaviour.

Equity Representative or Engager/Theatre:
Should you witness or experience, unprofessional, inappropriate or unwelcome behaviour, we encourage you to reach out to the individual you are most comfortable with whether that is [insert engager contact name], or someone you trust for support.
