The Canadian Opera Agreement (COA) is negotiated between Equity and the Canadian Opera Company (COC). The COC is the largest opera company in Canada and performs in its own opera house, the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto, Ontario.
The current Canadian Opera Agreement expires June 30, 2028.
The Categorization of Roles is an integral part of Equity’s opera agreements, used to determine the classification of a particular role (Lead, Featured, Supporting, Bit, Chorus Bit, etc.). It also contains voice types for each role (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass, etc.) and the minimum number of choristers to be engaged for each opera.
Engagers are responsible for maintaining safe and respectful workplaces. The Engager has a further obligation to provide workers with a recourse for raising concerns without fear of reprisal and to promptly investigate any safety concerns or incidents of inappropriate behaviour in the workplace.
