Riders

A rider is an attachment to a contract that adds extra details, terms, or conditions. It becomes a legally binding part of the contract once both parties agree to it.

In some instances, a rider may be required under the Dance • Opera • Theatre (DOT) engagement policy. Here are some examples:

Extraordinary Risk

Equity determines what Extraordinary Risk in consultation with the Engager. Artists participating in Extraordinary Risk activities must receive an Extraordinary Risk Rider that details the exact nature of the risk and provides for all steps taken to mitigate the risk.

A copy of the rider must be filed with Equity.

Nudity and Acts of Intimacy

Articles 7 and 14 contain provisions for Nudity and Acts of Intimacy.

All Artists involved in scenes that require nudity or intimacy must have a rider that details the nature of the intimacy or nudity and all requirements.

Any changes that the Artist agrees to during the course of rehearsal should be added to the rider.

Additional Duties

Artists cannot perform Additional Duties without negotiating a fee for those duties. The fee can’t be less than 10% of their contractual weekly fee, per week.

Additional Duties should be listed in a rider that must be filed with Equity. They can include:

  • Playing additional parts or undertaking additional understudy assignments
  • A Stage Manager operating lighting or sound boards
  • Laundry duties or maintenance of costumes
  • Cleaning and maintenance of props or scenery
  • Acting as Dance Captain, Fight Captain, or Intimacy Captain
