Accredited post-secondary educational institutions (e.g. universities, colleges, etc.) can use the Dance • Opera • Theatre (DOT) engagement policy to access Equity members and other professionally affiliated artists for productions or workshops. However, the engagement cannot be for traditional classroom based teaching.
Educational Institutions
Payment to the Artist
An educational institution may pay an Artist using its usual accounting practices and payment timelines, so long as they are paid as soon as possible. The educational institution must confirm with Equity when the Artist can reasonably expect to be paid and that information should be included as a rider to the Artist’s contract.
Minimum fees for each discipline (i.e. Dance, Opera, Theatre) can be found in the applicable Schedule at the end of the engagement policy.
Remittances to Equity
An educational institution may remit by cheque amounts owing to Equity using its usual accounting practices and payment timelines.
Security
An educational institution is not required to post the standard security or prepay the Artist.
Schedule
If the DOT’s rehearsal and performance scheduling provisions don’t suit the reality of the educational institution, the Artists and institution can discuss a mutually acceptable schedule. Equity must be informed of any special arrangements or schedule considerations.
Additional Duties
Attendance at faculty/staff meetings, classroom activities, marking or contributing to a student’s mark or other similar activities must be negotiated separately and should be included as a rider to the Artist’s contract.

Equity members studying or working at educational institutions
Equity members who are full-time or part-time students, faculty or staff at an accredited educational institution can ask Equity to work without being on contract if participating in a production is a requirement of their academic course or staff obligations.
This request can be submitted to Equity for each academic year, or on a production-by-production basis, whichever the member prefers.
