Production DetailsThe Shoe [Original French Title: Le Soulier] By David Paquet Translated by Leanna Brodie
Casting BreakdownMELANIE, A custard filler at Donut Donut; Benny’s mom. Melanie is the sole parent to a child with intense and constant needs, and hasn’t slept through the night for years. Smart and funny, she deeply loves and accepts her son, and also has the no-holds-barred gallows humour of a real caregiver… one who has no one to depend on except herself. Her one occasional escape from the demands of her life is her romance novel, Miracle of Love. Poetic, heightened text; slightly surreal universe; real emotion. From the playwright: “Expert in crisis management. Except her own.” Plays mid-30s to mid-40s. BENNY, A very unusual little boy; Melanie’s son. Need to be a strong mover/physical actor: will be tackling some modern choreography as well as spare, poetic, heightened text. Every other character in this play is pretty good at verbally articulating what is happening to them and what they are struggling with: Benny, not so much. His intense inner battle comes out in ways that are physical and kind of epic, but he is best understood as a unique, deeply thinking and feeling young person, not a diagnosis. From the playwright: “For him, some of the simple things aren't simple at all.” Plays age 8, but looking for submissions from young adults.
