Casting Breakdown
Track 1 (Male-Identifying or Nonbinary, Indigenous) Chapin, John Norton and others Chapin An American soldier billeting in the Secord home; an asshole, not to be trusted (though he doesn’t necessarily telegraph that). John Norton Mohawk Chief, Haudenosaunee military leader; worldly, full of himself, friendly but intimidating. A master manipulator; generous host. Track 2 (Male-Identifying or Nonbinary, Indigenous) Winters, Prince Edward VII and others Winters An American soldier billeting in the Secord home; cordial, makes an effort to keep the peace. Prince Edward VII On a visit; likes the idea of making Laura’s dreams come true; flippant. Track 3 (Female-Identifying or Nonbinary, Indigenous) X, Elizabeth Secord and others X An American soldier billeting in the Secord home; not overly anything, holds his cards close to his chest. Elizabeth Secord Laura’s niece; thirteen, hasn’t seen much of the world; speaks earnestly, though ultimately hard to get a read on.
Accessibility Information
Laura Secord’s Thing is a new Canadian comedy about Canada’s most unlikely of wartime saviors. Running in Crow’s Studio Theatre May 2027, this play by Brad Gira, co-created and directed by William Dao, brings (co-creator) Annie Lujan back to the Crow’s stage - following her Smash hit with Monks in 2025 - in the role of Laura Secord. Canadian identity, sovereignty in the face of aggression, and personal mythologies collide with two feet on a mission in this irreverent and high stakes comedy; a doodle in the margins of our high-school history textbook. DATES First Rehearsal - April 29th Opening - May 22nd Closing June 13th (Possible extensions to June 17th)
Ethnocultural Mandate
The three ensemble tracks will be cast exclusively with Indigenous performers (First Nations, or Métis). Each track encompasses multiple characters, including one character specifically identified as Indigenous; the remaining characters are not ethnoculturally specific. This intentional casting mandate reflects the production’s engagement with Canadian history and Indigenous presence within that history. Indigenous performers from all nations, communities, and backgrounds are encouraged to audition.
