Production Details

FOR ARTS SAKE by Colin Heath For Art's Sake stresses the importance of nurturing art and creativity in children from a young age. Art’s journey shows the enriching effects of tapping into one’s potential and becoming involved in artistic pursuits. Art is an 11-year-old boy who, despite his name, has no interest or appreciation for the world of art. Art’s mother is too caught up in her work life to take an active interest in her son’s activities. A whole new world opens up for Art when she gives him a gift of a sketch book and a felt pen and encourages him to visit the art gallery. There Art meets Franny, who introduces him to the works of famous artists such as Van Gogh, Escher and Chagall. The audience follows Art’s learning through a series of visual projections of the works being discussed. Through his interaction with Franny, Art gains the confidence to pursue his own artmaking and nurture his imagination. She gives him a frame which, when mounted on his bedroom wall, becomes a window into the world of Art’s Imagination, complete with creative puppet characters: Wazo, representing Art’s first drawing; Scrap-Heap, a monster of discarded drawings; and Scribble, a singing “tangled old mess of lines.” SHOWDOWN by Jamie Norris Pushed to be ‘the best’ by his dad, Rex is practicing intensely to make the all-star hockey team, to the detriment of his school work and his friendships. Becky is a star, too; a star student determined to win the spelling bee. She’s always working to be the top of the class, to impress her parents and to be as good as, or better than, her older sister. Enter Marshall, a happy-go-lucky kid who, though a little quirky, just wants to have friends and to fit into his new school. But Marshall’s high marks make him a threat to Becky and cause a rift in her friendship with Rex, who’s just happy to have a new buddy to play hockey with. Throughout Showdown, these three kids learn to deal with the challenges and rewards of competition and cooperation. Showdown is about being happy with who you are, about success and cooperation and about being true to your friends. This production is a humorous and touching story about acceptance and friendship. OUTSIDE by Paul Dunn Daniel’s ready to talk. And his friends Krystina and Jeremy are ready to help. But is it too late? Set in separate but simultaneous lunch periods at two different high schools, the teenagers are faced with acknowledging what drove them apart. At his new school, Daniel speaks to the Gay-Straight Alliance about the bullying and depression that forced him to move. He looks back fondly at the bond he formed with Krystina and Jeremy in history class and the trauma he faced from anonymous text messages. At his former school, Krystina and Jeremy are setting up for their first GSA meeting while grappling with the guilt of not doing more to help their friend. For the first time Daniel has an appreciative audience, but his friends face an empty room. The narratives intertwine as Daniel gains more confidence in his queer identity and Krystina and Jeremy try to assess their boundaries as straight people who want to create a safe space. By talking about mistakes, abuse, a suicide attempt and a move, the teens find comfort in perspective and power in numbers.

Accessibility Information

Magnus Theatre is a fully accessible space. Our Mainstage and Studio Theatres are on the main level, with ground level doors into the building and a wheelchair accessible ramp with power assisted doors. Our Studio Theatre doubles as our rehearsal space and therefore features the level of accessibility it has when it is being used as a performance space. Our additional rehearsal space is on the second floor and can be reached via elevator. Both floors feature fully accessible, gender neutral, washrooms. As this is a TYA Tour, Magnus Theatre cannot guarantee that each performance venue will be fully accessible but accessibility information is sought from each venue prior to performance booking, information which is then passed on to the touring company.
