Casting Breakdown

William Wilson is a man facing the gallows, yet possesses a vibrant, untamed imagination. He is not a passive victim, but a theatrical force of nature. Age Range: 20s–40s Male presenting. The Tragic Fabulist / The Charming Rogue / The Accidental Folk Hero William is a man condemned to die by the state in 1838 Upper Canada. His physical reality is a dark, cold cell; his impending fate is the rope at Redbridge. Yet, spiritually and mentally, he refuses to be caged. He is a master of tall tales, a spinner of yarn, and a believer in the absurd. He fights the terrors of his execution not with tears, but with a weaponized imagination. We are looking for an actor who can balance William's surface-level charm, quick wit, and comedic timing with the haunting undercurrent of a man who knows exactly how few breaths he has left. His humour isn't a lack of awareness—it is his defiance. We are looking for actors with vocal range, physical expressiveness, and the ability to pivot on a dime from high-energy storytelling to devastating emotional stillness. The actor needs to make us laugh, encourage us to dream and ultimately break our hearts.

Accessibility Information

The Last Hanging at Redbridge by Paul Van Dyck The play is set in 1838 Upper Canada. It is a historical piece inspired by true 19th-century events in Brockville and Perth, focusing on three unlikely characters who become fatally entangled by colonial land grabs, an ill-fated rebellion, and a giant wheel of cheese. Using humour and magic realism to depict a grim historical event like a colonial execution, William Wilson as an eccentric teller of tall tales subverts the expected bleakness of a period drama. This is a world premiere production, directed by Peter Hinton-Davis.
