Casting Breakdown

It is 1956. Hilda and Sam are recent empty-nesters. Now that their 30-something children have finally left home, they are thrilled with their new freedom. But in the wake of a newly failed marriage and a lost job the two adult children unexpectedly move back home. Both on the same day. Later that morning, a new love interest arrives, followed by a charming but potentially dangerous figure, determined to collect the money he is owed. HILDA – Completely committed to the role of wife and mother. Nurturing but also no-nonsense. Intelligent and quick-witted, practical. The de facto head of the household. SAM – Confident and proud- at least that’s how he wishes to be seen. Hilda is the absolute love of his life. Has spent his years quietly accepting his modest economic and vocational circumstances, however he is beginning to have serious doubts about it all. GARY – Hilda and Gary’s thirty-something son. Often impulsive. An under achiever with a good stock of excuses. But he does have some very timely entrepreneurial ideas that, if he was able to ever launch one of them, could lead to success. He is smitten with Bobbi, the new love in his life, and not shy to show it. JANEY – Hilda and Gary’s thirty-something daughter. Impressionable and often naive. Disillusioned with her marriage she returns carrying many complaints and frustrations- some of them very justified. Inclined towards wishful thinking, or maybe willful blindness, she often does not make wise or even realistic decisions. BOBBI – The new woman in Gary’s life. A force of nature. As a star trombone player in an all-woman’s band, she is both hip and a free spirit. Although Bobbi “out-shines” Gary in every respect, she thrives on his admiration and complete devotion. As “square” as Hilda may be, Bobbi is not one to judge, and in fact takes a quick liking to her. BEVERLY – A sophisticated and often charming man. Effortlessly courteous. Incongruently, he makes his living as a bookie. As such, he can also be menacing- with his unseen underlings, even more so. In spite of all this, he is slowly beguiled by Hilda and feels a growing attachment to the family. Start dates for Bobbi and Beverly may be negotiable.
