Equity has been a part of my life for 30 years - woven in a wonderful way throughout my theatre career. I have worked and produced under multiple agreements over many disciplines, served as Manitoba/Nunavut Councillor and VP Internal. During my time with Equity I was struck by the fact that Equity was ours - an Association that made member service its reason for being.
With changes in governance and the loss of regional voices through the disbanding of local advisories, Equity seems to be suffering from a lack of member engagement. In order for Equity to be an advocate for us, our work and our future, we must all be the change that will move Equity into a more flexible and transparent organization - able to shift to meet its members’ changing needs.
It is time for our agreements to flex in order to foster a dynamic atmosphere in which we can all create extraordinary theatre. Aspiring to create agreements and policies that promote our art and protect artists should be our shared goal. Equity represents the best of who we are and what we can be. Together, we can find our voice and make our Association stronger - both locally and nationally.

My previous term on Equity Council proved to be a productive and fulfilling experience. When I initially pursued a representative position on Council, I had hopes of connecting more closely with my region and becoming an advocate for safety in our rehearsal spaces. Between 2015 and 2018, I organized annual local member gatherings, connected with many established and young professionals on various issues in my community, and was part of the collaborative development of the Not In OUR Space! campaign addressing harassment in Equity workplaces. If re-elected as the Manitoba-Nunavut Councillor, I will continue to support the needs of my community and region, while striving to uphold the values of the membership across Canada.
At this point in time, Equity has only begun to scratch the surface of mental health concerns among the membership at large. Action must begin now. A huge part of my focus in the upcoming Council term will be devoted to nation-wide outreach, surveying the entire membership to further explore these issues, researching alternative insurance coverage options, working toward addressing these problems, and establishing necessary resources for all our members.
I look forward to the prospect of representing the members of the Manitoba & Nunavut region again.
