Participate in the Canadian Artists and Content Creators Economic Survey
Equity encourages its members and all artists working in live performance to participate in an important survey!

The Department of Canadian Heritage is conducting a survey to create a comprehensive and current portrait of the artistic and creative community in Canada at large. It will help develop a better understanding of the realities and experiences of artists and content creators in Canada prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Canadian Artists and Content Creators Economic Survey is online and will be open until June 18, 2021.

The data gathered through this survey will serve the important function of informing future and existing federal government policies and programs, ensuring the Department continues to be responsive to the creative sector’s reality. This survey presents a critical opportunity for artists and content creators to have their voices heard. This includes you!

Q&A

I’ve already completed other surveys. Why should I participate in this one?
The survey takes only 15 minutes to complete and the information we receive is crucial to our future approaches to support the sector and Canadians working in it. This is your opportunity to give policymakers a view into your lived experiences as an artist or content creator working in Canada, both before and during the ongoing pandemic.

Why should I share the link to the survey with my creative friends and peers?
In order for policymakers to make well-informed decisions, data that accurately reflects the diverse experiences of artists and content creators is crucial. As such, we would like the survey to reach as many artists and content creators from various backgrounds across Canada as possible. Share with all your creative friends and help ensure the Department continues to be responsive to the creative sector’s reality!

Who can participate?
  • Anyone in Canada aged 16 or older who does creative or artistic work as an important component of their professional identity, whether on their own time, freelance or with organizations – either full-time or alongside other jobs, at any point in their career stage.
  • The survey is open, but not limited to, the following:
    • Writers: fiction and non-fiction book authors, playwrights, poets, screenwriters, technical writers, etc.
    • Visual artists: painters, craft artisans, designers, illustrators, installation artists, video game designers, concept artists, photographers, printmakers, etc.
    • Performing artists: actors, choreographers, circus artists, comedians, dancers, mimes, puppeteers, spoken word artists, storytellers, etc.
    • Musical artists: composers, musicians, singers, songwriters, etc.
    • Audio-visual directors: in film, television, video games, or other digital media productions, including on social media.
What topics are covered?
There are five topics covered in this survey:
  1. "Your story as an artist or creative" asks questions about your background and creative work.
  2. "Employment and income" asks about your recent circumstances (up to 2019).
  3. "Creative work in context of COVID-19" asks about your experience creating and earning in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  4. "Relationship to industry" asks about your work with professional organizations and associations.
  5. The survey ends with basic demographic information questions.
How can I help?
Participate in the survey and share it widely within your networks. Thank you for being part of this nationwide effort by the Department of Canadian Heritage to establish a more comprehensive and current portrait of the artistic and creative community in Canada.
