How Equity is governed

Equity is a democratically structured organization run by artists for artists. It is entirely self-supporting, funded by members' initiation fees and dues. Equity is the united voice of its members, and its strength lies in the collective support given by its members to its members.

The government of Equity is vested in a national Council of 22 members from across Canada. The number of councillors from each region is proportional to the number of members in each region.

In 2005 Equity's national Council voted to implement Policy Governance as the operating structure of the Association. Policy Governance went into effect on January 1, 2006. Click here for further information on Equity's Policy Governance governing structure.

The current Council is elected for a three year term beginning November 2006 and lasting until November 2009. Council meets 10 times per year and is responsible for policy decisions. Two meetings per year are face-to-face and held in Toronto, and seven more are conducted by telephone conference call. Council also holds one face-to-face meeting each calendar year in a city other than Toronto. The 2007 meeting will be in Halifax, Nova Scotia in October.

Requests for Council Consideration
Councillors, CPAG members and members-at-large may submit topics to Council for discussion by using the Request for Council Consideration form. Once completed, a copy of the form will be forwarded to Equity's President, Secretary-Treasurer and to the Executive Director.

For information on how Council deliberates requests for consideration on any matter, please see Policy Governance Document - GP#4 - Agenda Planning, Article 7
