Equity is a democratically structured organization run by artists for artists. It is entirely self-supporting, funded by members' initiation fees and dues. Equity is the united voice of its members, and its strength lies in the collective support given by its members to its members.

The government of Equity is vested in a national Council of 22 members from across Canada. The number of Councillors from each region is proportional to the number of members in each region. The current Council is elected for a three year term beginning November 2009 and lasting until November 2012.

Two meetings per year are face-to-face and held in Toronto, and seven more are conducted by telephone conference call. Council also holds one face-to-face meeting each calendar year in a city other than Toronto. The 2010 meeting will be in Calgary, Alberta in October.
