Independent Theatre Review Committee's Final Report now available
Equity Council is pleased to share the final report from the 2011 Independent Theatre Review. Doing the research for this project has taken considerably longer than many hoped it would, but the results have been worth the wait. By collecting information so broadly, we have a much better idea of the relative value all members place on the benefits they expect to receive under indie contracts, and how those may vary across the country. It has also afforded us the chance to hear a wider range of views on several key topics, and that input will be incorporated as well.

Executive summary of findings from the Equity member
survey on small-scale theatre
The Independent Theatre Review Committee (ITRC) announces the release of an executive summary providing a high-level overview of findings from the Equity member survey on small-scale theatre. This survey was conducted from February 28 through March 29, 2011. The survey report can be found at http://www.caea.com.
Please note: This executive summary only addresses responses to the closed-ended (multiple-choice, agree/disagree, etc.) questions. The ITRC is currently in the process of analyzing thousands of responses to open-ended questions on the member survey. The Committee has also recently received the results of the engager survey, and is in the process of analyzing that data as well.
Over the next few months, the ITRC will be using all of this data - in addition to reports from CPAG meetings and other data collected earlier - to review Equity's governance policies and make recommendations for policy changes or amendments to Council.
Questions and comments regarding the survey summary can be emailed to the ITRC.

ITRC background
Equity Council's ITRC is now well into its task of examining the current state of small-scale and independent theatre nation-wide, from the perspectives of staff, members, and producers: everyone from those who assist with the production of new work (on stage or off) to those who help drive and create new work for themselves and others. The outcome of our efforts will be a set of recommended policy alternatives, supported by detailed research data, that aim to help Council align the Association's objectives and practices with the needs and priorities of members whose passions are ignited by small-scale and independent theatre work.

We are now in the data collection phase of our mandate. Equity members are encouraged to email the ITRCwith any queries on our work or suggestions about data collection.

A survey of the Equity membership working in small-scale production was closed on March 25th, 2011. The second phase of the Committee's work, a survey of independent producers and Equity members who identified themselves as engagers, was completed on June 10, 2011.

Committee objectives set out by Equity's Council:
• Collect and compile information on the current state of engagement opportunities for work that operates below the scale of the current CTA and ITA agreements.
• Acquire information from staff, a representative cross-section of independent theatre engagers, and a representative cross-section of the membership.
• Arrive at no fewer than three alternatives for policy change to improve member engagement opportunities for work below the scale of the CTA and ITA.
• Present an interim report to Council in February 2011, with a final report to be considered at the full Council meeting in June 2011.
**It is important to note that the Committee has NOT been tasked with creating new agreements or modifying existing ones, but with providing decision-making information to Council that will inform changes to existing agreements or the creation of new ones.**
